Essential Oils for Allergies, Sinuses and Respiratory Complaints

There is no question that inhalation of the right essential oils can produce an almost instant clearing of congested nasal passages.  Many of us are familiar with Vicks Vaporub and similar products which lists camphor, eucalyptol and/or menthol (chemicals found in essential oils such as eucalyptus and peppermint) as active ingredients.  Vicks produces an aroma that helps you breath better almost instantly.  There are many essential oils that do just this – the chemical composition of their aromas have expectorant and decongestant actions which open the lungs and drain the congestion in the respiratory system.  Further, there are essential oils that have an anti-inflammatory, antihistamine effects, which altogether produce a natural solution to the ails of allergies and sinus problems.

Essential Oils to Decongest

Inhalation is a great way to administer essential oils for the benefit of the respiratory system.  It makes perfect sense.  By breathing in the vapors, the aromatic molecules travel through the nose all the way down to the bronchial tubes in the lungs, effecting all the key places along the way.

Oils like eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary, pine, and frankincense all help to open up the lungs, encourage a productive cough and ultimately drain the sinuses.  These oils simultaneously have demonstrated positive effects on the immune system.

An Solution for Allergy Sufferers

Blue Tansy is known for it’s anti histamine and anti inflammatory effects.  Aromatherapy users report an instant clearing of the nasal passages and a reduction in nasal inflammation, allowing for better and deeper breathing after inhalations and topical, diluted use of Blue Tansy oil.  Blue Tansy is found in our blend Cool Relief.

The combination of equal parts lavender, lemon and peppermint can do wonders for allergies.  Diffused or used in an inhaler these three oils address the inflammation, itchiness and congestion that comes with allergy season.  They also support the immune system directly.  Take it a step further by rubbing a drop of peppermint on the roof of the mouth for instant relief, or take the three oils mixed together (1 drop of each) in an empty capsule orally as an aromatic medicine.  This internal method is well established by professional aromatherapists and has stood the test of time as an alternative means to keep allergies at bay during even the toughest of seasons.  Of course it is extremely important to use high quality, therapeutic and responsibly produced essential oils (like ours) and only use oils internally according to an aromatherapists recommendations.

The Perfect Blend

Blends utilize the power of synergy.  By combining essential oils that are decongestant, anti-inflammatory, antihisthamine and promote a health immune system – aromatherapy can be a powerhouse for those with allergy and sinus issues.  In addition to equal parts lemon, lavender and peppermint as we mentioned,  think of adding eucalyptus for even more decongestant power or frankincense to give the immune system an extra kick.

Aromatherapy is a great alternative to help cope with allergies, sinus issues and coughs.  Most essential oils have a profound effect on the whole - body mind and spirit - and simply by incorporating them into your daily life, you’re paving the way to better and sustained health.
